In Wales, the owl is called Blodeuwedd, or "flower-face". This name comes from a Welsh tale in which a man called Lleu is cursed by his mother, and can have no human wife. Two uncles conjure a wife for him (Blodeuwedd) from wildflowers, and he loves her deeply. Wild and independent, she soon meets another man, and together they plot Lleu's murder. When her treachery is discovered, one of the uncles punishes her by turning her into an owl and banishing her to the night.
