Every autumn, tens of millions of North American monarch butterflies begin their migration to a small section of fir forest in the mountains of central Mexico. The journey lasts three months and covers 2,500 miles. They arrive in late November and early December, and are believed by many to be the souls of departed ancestors returning to visit their families.
