There are folktales from many cultures that seek to explain why there appears to be a silhouette of a rabbit on the Moon. In several of these tales, a selfless rabbit sacrifices itself for the greater good and, as recognition of the rabbit's virtue, the gods immortalize his visage on the face of the Moon. The "Jade Rabbit" was inspired by the Chinese version of this folktale.
